Exhibition Description

Steven Tritt’s landscape work is grounded in his connection to nature and his experience observing the many ways humanity impacts the natural world. A significant part of this experience is personal: seeing the effects with the eyes, capturing the scene with a camera, utilizing the collected images in the studio—takes him on an entire journey, enunciated with painting.

He is taking in the whole picture: Sadness, exhilaration, consternation, wonder, isolation, potential, joy, death, chaos, order, existence, being, mystery, foreboding, elation, solemnity, disgust, hope, fear, turmoil, expansiveness, the past, present and future.

Tritt sees the land as reflection of himself, a complicated multifaceted being in its own right. Witnessing the many ways that humanity attempts to order nature and bend it to its will results in a visible conflict, tangible suffering and a felt pessimism that is often explored in his work. Additionally, observing nature untouched and recognizing that beauty is inseparable from the entire motivation when painting. Steven Tritt's landscapes signal a search for identity and the relationship between humanity and nature. By engaging in this subject matter, he is given the opportunity to make sense of the world and to make sense of himself.
