Even small paintings can take forever to complete. I stuck with it because I thought the subject was important: litter in the landscape. There is a series here, but I had to knock out the first one. Plausible Deniability started out as pure painted landscape with acrylic and latex. It’s something I had done many times and it just didn’t stand out. Then I started to add pieces of materials, mostly bits of paper and cardboard, and string. I alternated between layers of collage and painting. Compositionally there’s an alluding to illusional space while maintaining the flatness of the canvas. The yellowness of the sun suggests a hope for the future. The irony is tomorrow’s landscape will be filled with a lot of garbage.
