The California Dreamin’ subjects are taken from photographs shot on trips romanticizing the natural forms of Southern California while utilizing the Green, Orange, and Purple Triad. This is a washy vision that suggests a simplified representation of tree like forms and spatial relationships. The view is from above which gives the scene an extreme perspective. The composition is drawn with graphite. Gouache is added to a wet surface creating many levels of transparency. Restraint played a role in this work. Originally, I intended to paint the entire negative space green but instead left a section untouched which gives the work an unplanned high value shape. The addition of the viridian in the lower corner suggests a pushing out of the triad boundary.
